We have opened a new section on the website dedicated to teaching WD TV users how to perform common tasks with their media player. It will contain tutorials on how to install and configure firmware, applications and hacks.

There are 6 tutorials for now: “Wifi USB adapater installation”, “NFS sharing on Windows XP” and “Torrent application setup .”  But we have a lot of new tutorials coming up with topics covering how to customize the OSD and how to use custom firmware, upnp devices, and apple movie trailers.

Wtorrent is an excellent webui for rtorrent and after this tutorial you’ll be able to manage rtorrent from the web… forward a port and you can even connect to your wdtv from the internet to queue up torrents!

In order to take advantage of this tutorial you must either be running WDLXTV or Zoranders ext3-boot firmware versions. You must also have B-rad.cc’s Optware for WDTV package installed.

What you need:

• USB Key formatted FAT or FAT32. The windows utility formats it fine
• WDTV device (obviously)
• A USB->Ethernet Adapter. For a list of compatible ones go here http://root.unknown.sk/wdtv/wiki/dok…ed_usb_devices I am using the Apple USB Ethernet Adapter which I bought from the Apple Store. Was easiest and quickest one for me to get.

We will start off with the hardest first… Setting up an NFS Share.
Step 1:
Download Windows Services for Unix version 3.5 available at
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d…displaylang=en

and then run it and extract it to a temporary location.
Step 2
Follow this guide for installation. READ NOTES below
NOTE: When selecting which components to install, make sure you select NFS server as well as client, and also make sure to select “Server for NFS Autthentication”
When you come to the part to add a passwd file and a group file. Use the attached files at the end of this post (remove the .txt extension)
Only follow this guide for installation.

Step 3
Configure NFS server. Go to start menu, and run the “Services for UNIX Administration” application from the Windows Services for UNIX folder

NOTES: To see the NFS share tab, right click on folder you wish to share, and go to sharing. You should see a NFS Share tab.
If you are missing the NFS Share tab, try restarting your computer. I had to for it to show.
Right click on start menu, and go to explore.
Expand My Network Places
Expand Entire Network (you may need to refresh if you don’t see it. Hit F5 to do so)
Expand NFS Network
Expand Default Lan
You should now see your computer.. Expand it, and you should see your shared folders. Open it to see if you see your files.
If the folder is empty, and you cannot see any files you need to add a password to your account. (Go to control panel, User Accounts, Click on your account, change password). ALso, I am not sure, but an administrator account may be required.
I know this sucks if you do not wish to have a password, but I don’t know any other way around it.

You should now be able to see all your NFS shares.. If you can’t then I am not sure what went wrong. Make sure you followed both guides closely.
Also if you have a firewall running then you have to open ports

Now we are going to install the firmware onto the USB key.

Step 4:
Download Zorander ext-boot from

I am currently using version 0.8.6

Step 5:
Unzip the download to a USB Key that is formatted FAT or FAT32. .

Step 6:
Modify the net.config file..
I do not use DHCP, but it should be fine.
This it my net.config file

HOST=wdtv
DHCP=no
IP=192.168.1.155
GW=192.168.1.1
NM=255.255.255.0
DNS1=192.168.1.1
I have the file attached, rename extension to .config

Step 7:
Modify the net.mounts folder.
Syntax is

xmount 192.168.0.44:/share ShareName nfs
