After months of inactivity a new release is finally out! Remember, this is still a beta release. Here’s whats new:

Resolved Issues:

Resolved issue where UI Language displayed as OFF when English is selected.
Resolved UI issue where “ContainsWWW” shows up in the search menu instead of “Contains”.
Resolved MKV audio/video sync issues.
Resolved issue where songs were displayed in alphabetical order instead of track order in album view.

New features:

Added video playlist support.
Added support for unlocking locked WD external drives.

WD Beta Firmware 1.02.10 Available

Sorry, we’re a little late on this post. WD has released 1.02.10 Beta to the public with a few bug fixes. Here is a quick rundown:

“What’s New?

Prerelease 1.02.10 (includes all previously released updates)

* Greek subtitles render slowly in Greek character encoding mode; subs render properly now
* Korean subtitles disappear during the video playback, Korean subs now play properly
* Playlists play in correct order. Instead of playing files in alphabetical order, they are played in the order added to the list.
* Metadata support for music improved over previous release

Added feature:

* Metadata support for music improved over previous releases. For example, browsing by genre is broken down into artists, then albums, then tracks.

Known issues:

* A few text strings were not translated properly over different UI languages”

WD Releases Beta Firmware 1.02.08

After about a month off, WD has finally released a new beta firmware today. It hasn’t been officially added to their prerelease site(as of the time of typing this) but it is available on their server. From the readme:

Bugs fixed in 1.02.08:
-Some characters still missing from Greek font
-VC-1 MKVs playback poorly
-Audio out of sync during MKV playback
-10 Minute FF and REV doesn’t work during MKV playback
-Audio clipping issues

WD Releases 1.02.07 Officially

If you head over to the WD TV website, you will see that 1.02.07 has been brought out of beta, sorta. This version appears to be the same as the beta release with no new fixes, but that hasn’t been completely confirmed yet. The release notes also are the same as when it was in beta and even says it’s the beta version. My WD TV didn’t recognize the firmware when it when I put it on my hard drive(while using the 1.02.07 beta). So, stay tuned in to our forum and website for the latest news and updates.

WD 1.02.07 Beta Firmware Available

Western Digital’s latest beta has arrived, only a few days after the last beta, with a few minor fixes. Fixed items and additions:

Added option to toggle subtitle default to ‘On’ or ‘Off’
Added subtitle outline thickness selection
Added hard drive spindown on WDTV power off

This is a prerelease version of the firmware. Feel free to install it but be aware this is beta firmware so use it at your own risk. If you are not comfortable with this, please wait for the final version.

WD releases new beta firmware 1.02.03

Western Digital has released a new pre-release beta firmware version. No official release notes to be found yet but these are some quick notes:

Windows-1250 Central European encoding added
Subtitle rendering quality improved
AVI loading time improved
Fixed an issue where thumbnails weren’t loading sometimes
Thumbnail loading times improved

NFS sharing on windows XP

What you need:

USB Key formatted FAT or FAT32. The windows utility formats it fine
WDTV device (obviously)
A USB->Ethernet Adapter. For a list of compatible ones go here http://root.unknown.sk/wdtv/wiki/dok…ed_usb_devices I am using the Apple USB Ethernet Adapter which I bought from the Apple Store. Was easiest and quickest one for me to get.

We will start off with the hardest first… Setting up an NFS Share.
Step 1:
Download Windows Services for Unix version 3.5 available at

and then run it and extract it to a temporary location.
Step 2
Follow this guide for installation. READ NOTES below
NOTE: When selecting which components to install, make sure you select NFS server as well as client, and also make sure to select “Server for NFS Autthentication”
When you come to the part to add a passwd file and a group file. Use the attached files at the end of this post (remove the .txt extension)
Only follow this guide for installation.

Step 3
Configure NFS server. Go to start menu, and run the “Services for UNIX Administration” application from the Windows Services for UNIX folder

Farscape walks you through the rest of configuring.
NOTES: To see the NFS share tab, right click on folder you wish to share, and go to sharing. You should see a NFS Share tab.
If you are missing the NFS Share tab, try restarting your computer. I had to for it to show.
Right click on start menu, and go to explore.
Expand My Network Places
Expand Entire Network (you may need to refresh if you don’t see it. Hit F5 to do so)
Expand NFS Network
Expand Default Lan
You should now see your computer.. Expand it, and you should see your shared folders. Open it to see if you see your files.
If the folder is empty, and you cannot see any files you need to add a password to your account. (Go to control panel, User Accounts, Click on your account, change password). ALso, I am not sure, but an administrator account may be required.
I know this sucks if you do not wish to have a password, but I don’t know any other way around it.

You should now be able to see all your NFS shares.. If you can’t then I am not sure what went wrong. Make sure you followed both guides closely.
Also if you have a firewall running then you have to open ports

You must add the Mapsvc.exe program to the Windows Firewall exception list. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, type firewall.cpl, and then click OK.
2. Click the Exceptions tab, and then click Add Program.
3. Click Browse, locate and then click Mapsvc.exe, and then click Open.

Note By default, this file is located in the C:\SFU\Mapper folder.

Now we are going to install the firmware onto the USB key.

Step 4:
Download Zorander ext-boot from

I am currently using version 0.8.6

Step 5:
Unzip the download to a USB Key that is formatted FAT or FAT32. .

Step 6:
Modify the net.config file..
I do not use DHCP, but it should be fine.
This it my net.config file

HOST=wdtv
DHCP=no
IP=192.168.1.155
GW=192.168.1.1
NM=255.255.255.0
DNS1=192.168.1.1
I have the file attached, rename extension to .config

Step 7:
Modify the net.mounts folder.
Syntax is

Code:

xmount 192.168.0.44:/share ShareName nfs

“share” is what your NFS share name is in windows.
“ShareName” is what you want it to appear on your WDTV device.
You can add as many as you like.

Step 8:
Set up your WDTV device. Make sure it is all hooked up to your TV, and that your Ethernet adapter is plugged into a USB slot, and that you have an ethernet cord running to the adapter.

Step 9:
Insert the USB key into the other spare USB slot.
Start the WDTV device, once it is loaded, you should see it saying something about found new firmware. Click the OK button on your remote, to install the firmware. It may take 5 minutes or so for it to complete.
Note: You are going to have to leave the USB key plugged in at all times, even after you install the firmware. If you need more USB slots because you also want to add a harddrive, you will need to use a USB hub. I tested it, and everything works fine with a USB hub.

Go to videos, go to folder view, and you should see your share. Try clicking on it and if you see your movies everything has been setup correctly!
If you cant see it, then not sure what went wrong. I followed these exact steps on a fresh isntall of XP and I am able to access my NFS share.

Step 10: (Optional)
If you want to play around with the box, then you can telnet into it.
go to start->run.
Type in “telnet 192.168.1.155″ (or whatever the IP of the WD device is)
You now have access to the linux.. Only do this if you know linux.
Username is root no password.

You can also FTP into the box by using an FTP application. Use the ip and username root no password

Hopefully this will clear everything up.
I know if I had a guide like this it would have only taken me an hour or two to set it up rather than 5 or 6 hours.
